Students from Ms. Carone and Ms. Williams’ College Oceans classes, and Dr. Figueiredo and Ms. Paulik’s Research classes were invited by the Citizens Campaign for the Environment, Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, and Friends of the Bay to attend the Long Island Sound High School Summit, tour the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Marine offices in Kings Park and to share their projects with scientists, environmental groups, and peers from seven other schools involved in the program.

Students were able to present, network with each other and professionals in conservation sciences, tour the labs and boathouse, and enjoy lunch while learning from each other and devising plans to keep collaborating on projects that will help preserve and protect our beloved Long Island Sound watershed.

Our students ave been working all year on a variety of projects designed to help better understand, preserve and protect the Long Island Sound, our local beaches, and a healthy coastal lifestyle.

The students, whose projects helped 探花社区 High School West achieve “Long Island Sound Blue School” status from the Long Island Sound Study, provided conservation updates for this year, showed off an alternative trash can lid designed to help keep beaches cleaner, shared action items and videos they created to inspire their peers, described research findings from studies they’ve conducted to understand connections between microplastics and harmful algal blooms, and demonstrated work they’re doing to better understand how particular toxins (referred to as “forever chemicals”) in our environment impact animals who live in our waters and us, too!
