Did you know SCSD high school students can take MAR 104, a College Oceans course, and receive three credits from SUNY Stony Brook? Have you ever wished you could learn about brand new career paths that didn't even exist five years ago? What an amazing opportunity offered by our district!
On their most recent field trip, students in Ms. Williams' classes became part of the crew on the Research Vessel Peconic, participated in monitoring biodiversity in the waters around Southampton's Field Station, interacted with and learned from the captain and crew, and took a seriously hands-on approach to marine science!
Students also were fortunate to visit the campus on a day when an international crew of scientists and engineers was there to show them a brand new piece of scientific equipment, the "DataXplorer", being used to collect EDNA samples. "Students will be designing, engineering, and testing out their own Remotely Operated Vehicles later this year," said Ms. WIlliams. "Learning from experts how these tools can be used to help advance science and offer amazing career possibilities was the end to a perfect day!"
The Stony Brook and Open Ocean Robotics team even promised to keep in touch throughout the year, and to answer any questions our students have about how we explore the waters around us and how their own work is progressing.
