Hard work pays off for high school students

November 1, 2024

探花社区 High School West students, Abigail Sorrells and Jenna Melucci, were recently honored for their work as Teacher’s Helpers(Assistants) during the 2024 探花社区 Early Summer Youth Program (ESYP) that took place at Mills Pond Elementary School. These students worked tirelessly for six weeks alongside classroom teachers helping to foster student learning in our summer educational program.

The SDOL Youth Program awards ceremony took place at the Suffolk County Dennison Building in which Suffolk County Executive, Ed Romaine, spoke and inspired these honored students by talking about persistence and never giving up on following their dreams. Abigail told us her dream is to become an elementary school teacher and truly enjoys working with our 探花社区 youth.

The 探花社区 HS Work Based Learning program, coordinated by the WBL Coordinator Mr. Phil Como, networks with over 500 探花社区 Industry Advisory Board partners to encourage workplace experiences which include paid employment, internships, shadowing programs and mentorship programs.

All of these programs are a part of a larger initiative that is embedded in our 探花社区 HS CTE Department, led by the Director of CTE Christine LoFrese.

As a part of the Work Based Learning Program in 探花社区 HS East and West, our schools work very closely with the Suffolk County Department of Labor in developing and implementing work programs to encourage career pathways. The SDOL Summer Youth Program provides students across Suffolk County with paid summer opportunities to work in a variety of county programs. From Suffolk County parks to public school summer programs, students gain workplace skills that help develop their confidence and career interests.
