Students from Mr. Chauncy Cone’s two AP Psychology classes from HSW visited Pilgrim Psychiatric Center. The students had the opportunity to visit the center’s museum, Animal Assisted Therapy Barn, and the Rehabilitation Center.
Sara Kalvin, Director of Rehabilitation, led the tour and explained to the students how Pilgrim provides a continuum of psychiatric services and programs that develop skills to manage psychiatric illness and better function in the community. During their visit, students learned about the history of Kings Park, Central Islip, and Pilgrim Psychiatric Centers
Pilgrim Psychiatric Center is the last of the three main psychiatric centers to remain open after Kings Park and Central Islip Psychiatric Centers merged with Pilgrim in 1996.
Today, there are 265 full time clients who live at the center.
